Economical motel-like accommodations, with suitable locations in the park, include the Village Inn along Lake McDonald at the western side of the park, the Rising Sun Motor Inn near the eastern entrance to the Going-to-the-Sun Road, and the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn at Many Glacier on the east.

Reservations for the lodges and motor inns can be made by calling Glacier Park Inc. at [406] 892-2525. This number can be used for information on the guided boat rides and red bus tours; reservations for these excursions can also be made at the lodge registration desk during your stay. More information is available at www.glacierparkinc.com

A variety of activities are available in the park and at the lodges, including nature and campfire talks, guided hikes, bird walks, talks by Blackfeet, Salish and Kotenai tribal members, and a wildflower stroll. A complete printed schedule of these and other activities can be picked up at the National Park Service visitor centers.

Horseback riding is available at Many Glacier Lodge and Glacier Park Lodge. Call Mule Shoe Outfitters at [406] 732-4203 for their various options.

Overnight accommodations near the park include the Izaak Walton Inn [406-888-5700, www.izaakwaltoninn.com, just off of Route 2 in Essex, Mont., which offers lodging both in the hotel and in turn-of-the-century cabooses, and the Resort at Glacier [800-368-3689, www.glcpark.com, located at the intersection of Highway 89 and the Going-to-the-Sun Road at St. Mary.

The towns of East Glacier and West Glacier were formerly workers' camps for the Great Northern Railway. East Glacier is a small, older town and West Glacier tends to be more modern, relatively speaking. The Thimbleberry Restaurant in East Glacier is a good choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A nice selection of delicious homemade pies waits at the Park Cafe, along Route 89, less than a mile north of the Going-to-the-Sun Road entrance at St. Mary. The bisonburgers there are also worth a try.

Logan Pass on the Going-to-the-Sun Road does not normally open until after May 1 and is sometimes not cleared of snow until June 15. The entrance fee for Glacier National Park is $20, which is good for seven days. For more information, call the National Park Service at [406] 888-7800 or visit www.nps.gov/glac

The Glacier Park Airport in Kalispell, Mont., is about a 90-minute drive from East Glacier and less than an hour from West Glacier. Amtrak runs the Empire Builder train from Chicago to East Glacier and West Glacier.
