part of "town" that is considered "bad- that's where people go to raise hell". i grew up hearing my grandfather say that polebridge was "full of damn hippies". of course, the north fork is the LOGICAL place for teenagers to go to get away- to drink beer and raise hell. this natural propensity is heightened by the occassional ACTUAL weirdness (a meth lab bust, or that aweful murder of that man from arizona a few years ago). If you watch the local television news in almost any smaller town, you will get a very distinct message: "be afraid". this becomes a powerful message as people get older and more frail and zenephopic.
So now, i hear my mom say "it's nothing but a bunch of meth labs up there". We spent a week up the north fork this past summer, (it IS beautiful!) and upon return, my mom asked "how was it?". I just smiled and said "terrible- nothing but a bunch of meth labs up there".
most people who say "that part of 'town' is bad- don't go there", never actually go there themselves....
