I don't always hang my pack, but I always feel better when I do.
...problem is, the scotch is in the pack and...well, need I go on?
I do always hang my food bag.
One tip learned the hard way: if you're going to hang your pack (which I think is the best idea), put a duckback on your pack...or a garbage bag. Most packs aren't waterproof. It's no fun to wake up to a cold, wet pack the morning after a rain shower.
