Arkie,

Most of the information you're looking for can be found on the Glacier NP Website Visitor Center site. Refer to the following link.
http://www.nps.gov/glac/pdf/2005bcguide.pdf

Starting on the page titled "Obtaining Your Backcountry Use Permit," you can print the actual application and read up on the application process with related dates and fees.

What the site doesn't tell you is how frustrated some applicants tend to become because there are plenty of folks who don't get their first or second requested itinerary. Instead, they get some completely different hike in a corner of the park they never planned on visiting. This isn't all bad because there are so many beautiful areas in Glacier, but it can be aggravating.

As far as knowing what you got...you'll get a confirmation email, which typically follows your credit card being charged the permit fees, which happens to be one way people track the activity on their request. The other way is via another page on this same website that shows the availability of campsites at each of the backcountry locations. It's a stressful time, sitting and waiting and watching campsites fill up.

Follow the process and when April 1st comes around, check in with this message board often...it's a buzz with anxious anticipation.

Hope that helps.
