In addition to what Bryan says, if you don't get a permit for the trip you want, most people advise hanging out at one of the ranger stations early on the first day of your trip to see if you can get a better one. The trick is to be among the first in line when the station opens to grab whatever is available for that particular day. So if you don't like what you get via the reservation process, there's always a chance you can get something better when you get to the park. The rangers will work with you as best they can, depending on availability.
