i was in the lamar valley last sept. big and beautiful, lots of animals. stayed in a little town just outside the park called silvergate but it doesn't open up until mid/late june. you could probably stay in cooke city. i'm not crazy about crowds but if you go in may there won't be any problems in that regard. northern yellowstone is higher elevation than glacier. about 9.5k so it's colder there. took us close to 10-11 hours to drive up to st mary but we stopped alot along the way.
