I agree with Tara. I would not be deterred from hiking or camping with a 9 month old. We did some 6-8 miles hikes with ours when they were ounger. They are small enough then that they can be carried with a quality pack designed for that. Just be sure to bring as many of your usual B, C, D, and E plans for pacifying your child at that age... milk, cheerios, rattles, whatever. We did not do any overnight hikes but, assuming you can carry your child and all of your gear it should be doable.
